UK budget 1996

The UK government's budget in 1996 was £315 billion. This pie chart shows what the government spent the money on, divided into ten categories.
The government spent most money, by far, on social security, £100 billion. This was almost twice as much as the next category, health, which cost £53 billion. After that is education, which the government spent £38 billion on. After that came debt interest which cost £25 billion. Then the government spent £23 billion and £22 billion for other expenditure and defence. The government’s budget money was less than £20 billion for law and order, housing heritage and environment, industry and agriculture. Transport with £9 billion is the smallest one.
The most striking feature of the chart is that social security and health expenditure combined accounted for almost a half of the UK budget in 1996.
